Ripon Kumar Sikder, PhD is a plant stress physiologist whose scientific journey began at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka, and carried him to the frontiers of crop science in Beijing. His work focuses on how crops survive salinity, drought, and nutrient stress — and how those discoveries can be translated into real food security for millions.
His PhD at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) in Beijing — the world’s largest national agricultural research institution — centered on salinity stress physiology in cotton, identifying reliable salt-tolerance markers and the role of nitrogen and mineral nutrition in alleviating abiotic stress. Today, as Deputy Program Director at BADC, he helps shape Bangladesh’s national seed policy.
Three primary research streams — all connected by one question: how do crops survive the worst conditions Earth throws at them?
Screening and identifying salt-tolerant crop genotypes using advanced physiological markers.
Using nitrogen and micronutrient applications to protect crops from abiotic stress damage.
Investigating ROS metabolism, photosynthesis, and chemical defoliation in Gossypium hirsutum.
